Welcome, WV Fireflyers
About this website:
The goal of this website is 2-fold:
-
Act as a resource for WV fireflyers, both long time enthusiasts and newcomers alike, to learn about local fireflies and ask questions.
-
Learn more about firefly species distributions in our state… with your help!
We aim to meet these goals by providing descriptions and flash animations of WV firefly species, a simplified downloadable field key to the flashing and glowing fireflies of our state (see below), and best practices for firefly viewing. We encourage any and all firefly related questions, concerns, stories, etc. to be sent to our email address: westvirginiafireflies@gmail.com.
You can also visit this link to learn about a citizen science opportunity to help the WV Division of Natural Resources learn more about WV fireflies!
Thank you and happy firefly viewing!

Quick Flash Guide to the Fireflies of WV
Because we are still trying to figure out what species of fireflies can be found in WV, if you see something that does not quite match any of the flash descriptions or is asterisked on this guide, please reach out to westvirginiafireflies@gmail.com.
